What Now?
Jesus ascends and disappears behind a cloud.
I think of the Apostles standing still, peering upwards and wondering, "What now?" I recognize that in my own life: times when I wait for God, wanting clarity, or wishing faith felt more obvious, more visible. The angels’ question to the apostles, however, is simple and direct: why are you standing there looking into the sky? Being a post-Ascension people, we benefit from the work and witness of the Apostles and the disciples that followed them throughout the centuries.
Heard of Him, But Don’t Know Him
Nowadays, it seems easy to assume that most people have at least heard of Jesus. In my life, I have experienced the difference between having heard of Jesus and having a personal, living relationship with Him and what that implies for the choices I face. That difference can manifest itself in small but meaningful ways, like how I respond under pressure; whether I am honest when it would be easier not to be; and how I treat people when I've nothing to gain. Though not visible on the outside, my heart and conscience tell me these things matter. Whether I’m aware of it or not, my actions are a witness to (the authenticity of) my faith.
Next Steps in Hesitation
When the Apostles saw the risen Christ before he ascended, “they worshiped, but they doubted” (Mt. 28:17). Faith and hesitation often exist side by side. It isn’t always clear or consistent. The Lord doesn’t wait for perfect faith (thankfully!). It’s a pilgrimage together. The Ascension doesn’t feel like an ending, but like the next step made possible by the Holy Spirit.
Invitations…
Where could God be inviting you to step forward instead of standing still? In your daily life, where could He be inviting you to live your faith concretely?
Who around you might come to know Jesus not through arguments, but through the quiet, simple actions and witness of your life?
