Peace Light of Bethlehem Comes to Good Shepherd

From the Grotto of Bethlehem to Good Shepherd

In a world that often feels heavy with noise, fear, and division, a small flame quietly reminds us of a deeper truth: peace is possible. Each year, the Peace Light of Bethlehem comes to us as a powerful sign of hope bearing the message that peace begins with open hearts, shared faith and gestures of forgiveness bringing hope for a new start. Each year, the Peace Light is taken from the Eternal Flame burning in the Grotto of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Flown in with a special lantern to Vienna, people from many nations gather to receive it and carry it onward. From there, it travels across borders and cultures, reminding us that we can be bearers of peace.

Our Confirmation Candidates Bring Us the Peace Light

On December 14th, nine of our Confirmation candidates received the Peace Light in Luzern and brought it to our church. Through lighted lanterns, they entrusted the flame to us, too. Their faith, their presence, and their willingness to serve are a light for our community. On January 1st, the Church celebrated the World Day of Peace; the call to pray for peace remains urgent. We pray especially for those living in the darkness of war and violence, that the light of peace may prevail and that they may rebuild their lives in hope and dignity.

Being a Bearer of Peace

War doesn’t just happen far away; it can happen right in our hearts: when we hold on to grudges, resist accepting and forgiving, or refuse to be compassionate. The Peace Light isn’t just a symbol, it’s meant to burn in our hearts and actions as Christians, too. When our Confirmation candidates carried this light, they reminded us that faith is alive and forward-looking with hope. It lets God in. Take a moment of stillness. Where might God be inviting you to be a light of peace in your own life?
