The new liturgical year, which begins on the First Sunday of Advent, places the Gospel of Matthew at its center. Beginning with a genealogy, its structure shows that the message of Jesus has a lineage. It is rooted in Abraham and David and continues through remarkable women – Tamar, Rahab, Ruth the Moabite, and Bathsheba.

In Jesus, this story finds its fulfillment: the ancient promise of God becomes reality. In this promise, we recognize how God’s love and mercy run through all of salvation history and reach their fullness in Christ Jesus.

May that same love hold and strengthen you in this holy season.
