The Shepherd of Peace
The Readings for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time have a continuous theme linking them together. Like a single thread woven through a garment, we read of the shepherd who is our leader and our peace. The theme is nicely wrapped up in Psalm 23.
The Lord is My Shepherd
Probably the best-known psalm and favorite biblical passage of many, it offers comfort and reassurance of God’s protection and guidance. It evokes calm and peaceful images. This well-loved psalm, however, can sometimes become repetitious. Let us try to spend some time with this psalm of David and rest in its words of peace.
Reflections on Psalm 23
“In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me” How do we allow God to guide our decisions and actions? Do we trust him, even when it detours from our planned route? “Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil, for you are at my side.” When we are afraid or feeling uncertain, most of us begin to panic and trust only in ourselves. Letting go of fear can be like opening a window to let in fresh air, bringing in renewed energy as we take in the presence of God. “You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” It seems that every day we are confronted with the dark side of others, of life and even our own dark side. Especially in challenging situations, God blesses us and spreads out his wondrous feast.
My Reflection
Reflecting on the image of God’s feast, the green pastures and restful waters, I pray that “only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life.” May you find peace in the words of this psalm and bring it out into the world around you.
