The Humble Obedience of St. Joseph: Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary
“he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.” Matthew 1:24a
When Joesph learned that Mary was expecting a child, he faced an agonizing decision. According to Jewish law, he had the right to quietly dismiss her, but instead, God spoke to him in a dream, revealing that this child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. The Gospel reading for this day, Matthew 1:16-21, 24a, tells the story of St. Joseph’s great act of faith:
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her... When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him."
Joseph's response is immediate obedience. He does not question, argue, or delay. Instead, he trusts in God's plan and takes Mary and Jesus into his home, embracing his role as the earthly father of the Son of God. His actions reflect deep humility, faith, and quiet strength, showing us that true greatness often comes not in words, but in trusting and obeying God’s will.
Role Models of Humility
St. Joseph teaches us humility and trust. He was not a man of many words and there is not a single recorded word of his in the Bible, but what is recorded are his actions of great faith. Like Joseph, we are often called to trust in God, even when we don’t fully understand his plan.
In our lives, we often times face situations where we must trust that God is working, even when things seem uncertain. Lent is a time to let go of fear and trust in God's guidance, just like Joseph did.
Pope Benedict XVI (1927-2022) spoke about St. Joseph’s example of faith, trust, and obedience multiple times during his pontificate. He often pointed out that Joseph does not speak a single word in Scripture, yet his actions demonstrate a profound spiritual depth.
"Saint Joseph gives us this great lesson in the spiritual life: he let God lead him." Pope Benedict XVI
In a homily given on December 18, 2005, Pope Benedict emphasized that Joseph's greatness was in his silent obedience. He was a man of action, but only as God directed him. Benedict contrasted Joseph’s attitude with a world that often wants control and certainty. He presented St. Joseph as a model for all believers, especially in times of confusion or uncertainty. Instead of relying on his own plans, Joseph trusted in God completely, even when things didn’t make sense. This quote encourages us, like St. Joseph, to surrender our will to God, knowing that he will guide us even when we can’t see the whole picture.
Pray
Heavenly Father, help us to follow the example of St. Joseph, who trusted in your plan with a humble heart. Teach us to listen for your voice, to act with faith, and to obey you even when the path is uncertain. May we grow in trust, knowing that you always lead us with love. Amen.
