The Desert of the Heart

"Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil.”Luke 4:1-2

The desert is often seen as a place of emptiness, but it is also a place of encounter. In the wilderness, distractions fall away, and what remains is truth, about God, about ourselves, about what truly matters. Jesus, weary and hungry, is tested. He is offered comfort, control, and recognition, but he chooses a different path. He responds not with power, not with self-justification, but with trust. He remains rooted in love, humility, and the unshakable certainty that God is enough.

Lent Invites Us to See with New Eyes

Lent is not meant to weigh us down with sorrow but to set us free, to give us clearer vision, lighter hearts, and a deeper sense of God’s love. It is an invitation into the desert of our own hearts, a call to strip away whatever separates us from Christ.

One of the greatest temptations we face is the temptation to judge—to measure others more harshly than we measure ourselves. We hold onto our own weaknesses with gentle hands, yet we tighten our grip when measuring the faults of others. But Jesus calls us to something greater: a different measure.

To be Christian is to love as Christ loves, to extend the mercy we long to receive, to replace judgment with understanding, and to let kindness be the language of our hearts.
