Rejoice Always: A Message of Joy and Kindness

Philippi was a Roman colony and the site of Paul’s first mission in Europe. Its population included Roman, Greeks and a Jewish community. It was in Philippi where Paul met Lydia, a merchant dealing in purple cloth. She became the first convert to Christianity.

In the Footsteps of St. Paul

In September of this year, together with pilgrims from our parish and the Italian Mission of Zug, we had the opportunity to visit Philippi. Once a busy Roman colony in Macedonia, its Christian community held a special place in Paul’s heart. They supported his ministry generously, even during his trials. This close bond is evident in Paul’s warm and personal tone throughout the letter. Even during his imprisonment there, Paul wrote of joy, humility, unity and finding strength in Christ.

Gaudete and Rejoice

The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete (latin for rejoice) Sunday. In the second reading, Paul offers us these words: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: Rejoice! Let your kindness be known to all. The Lord is near." (Philippians 4:4-5). Advent, is a season filled with joy and expectation. Paul’s words should remind us that true joy comes from knowing that God is near, and he accompanies us in every moment of life.

Personal Examination

How often do we allow our daily worries to overshadow this joy? When we turn our focus on Jesus and the promise he gives us, we can find joy in even the most challenging times. We can find joy in the kindness of others and in the kindness we bring into the world. Paul’s words are inspiring, “Let your kindness be known to all.” In a world often marked by division and hostility, kindness becomes a powerful witness to our faith.

Living the Message

During Advent, as we prepare for the coming of Christ, let your kindness shine. Perhaps it’s through a thoughtful word, an act of generosity, or simply a patient and gentle spirit in our daily interactions. Each small gesture can become a beacon of God’s presence in the world.

The Lord is Near. Gaudete.
