Mary's Song, Our Song

The Catholic faith is filled with feasts and celebrations which honor and recognise the works of saints, martyrs along with significant milestones in the church calendar. One such tradition is devotion to Mary, The Mother of Jesus.

History Lesson

In ancient Rome, the month of May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of all that blooms. In medieval times, it was customary in May to have celebrations throughout the month which expelled winter. It was during this time that Mary and May were combined with special devotions dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Some believe that this was the church’s response to the pagan rituals of ancient times.

Catholic Tradition

The Feast of the Visitation is celebrated every year on May 31st. On this day we hear Mary's journey (Luke 1:39-56) to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was expecting a child, John the Baptist. We hear the Magnificat, Mary’s Song in which she glorifies God for His goodness, mercy, and faithfulness. Mary magnifies the greatness of God’s power and love and at the same time recognises her own humility and willingness to serve as the handmaid of the Lord.

Living the Gospel

Her journey reminds us of the importance of reaching out to others in love and solidarity, especially during times of joy or difficulty. Her example challenges us to embrace our own calling with courage and humility, trusting in God's providence and saying "yes" to His call, even when it leads us into unknown territory. Like Mary, we should be beacons of light which is a reflection of the love of Christ that lives in us. Let us bring the humble light and love of Jesus to those around us, offering comfort, support, and encouragement in their time of need.
