Kindness in the Face of Opposition: Saturday of the Fifth Week of Lent

"So, from that day on they planned to kill him." John 11:53

In today’s Gospel (John 11:45-56), we see what happens after Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. You might expect this miracle to bring people to believe, but instead, it causes fear among the religious leaders. They are afraid that Jesus' growing influence could upset their power and peace with the Romans. So they begin to plan his death.

This shows us something important: real goodness and love are not always welcomed. Sometimes, when we do what is right or show compassion, we may be misunderstood, or even rejected. But Jesus stays true to his mission. He doesn’t stop loving. He knows it will cost him everything, but he goes on.

As we prepare for Holy Week, today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on our own lives:

  • Kindness Takes Courage: Are we ready to be kind, even if others don’t understand us? True kindness often takes courage, especially when it goes against what others expect or want.

  • Loving Like Jesus: Jesus' path leads to the cross. He gives everything for us. How can we show love like that in our own lives? How can we love others even when it’s hard?

  • Hope Beyond the Struggle: The story becomes darker as people plot against Jesus. But we know the cross is not the end. There is hope. Do we hold onto that hope when we face difficulties or feel misunderstood?

Pray

Lord Jesus,
You stayed strong in love and truth, even when others turned against you.
Help me to be kind and faithful, even when it’s not easy.
As we begin Holy Week,
Teach me to love like you do, and to walk your path with courage.
Amen.

Act

Today, think of someone who might feel left out, judged, or misunderstood.
A kind word, message, or small gesture can show them they are not alone.
Let your kindness be a sign of Jesus' love in the world.

Looking Ahead to Holy Week

Palm Sunday begins the most sacred days of our faith. We will walk with Jesus through joy and betrayal, suffering and silence.
Let's try not to rush through these days. Let’s slow down, stay close to him, and open our hearts to the mystery of his love.
This coming week is not only about remembering what happened, it is allowing it to touch us, change us, and prepare us to rise with him.
