Harvest Blessings
The signs of autumn are all around us. The beauty of this time of year reminds us of the generosity of God’s creation and the hard work of His people. The Second Reading from James (James 5:1-6) on the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time calls for fairness and generosity. It’s not only a warning to the rich but a challenge for us to reflect on how we use the gifts we have been given.
Share the Wealth
James criticizes those who hoard wealth and don’t pay workers fairly, saying, "The wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud.” This should be a reminder that the food we enjoy comes from the often "unseen" hard work of many. The time of harvest is not only for celebrating the generosity of creation, it is also a time for practicing justice and expressing our gratitude. Our Lenten Campaign, which will begin in March 2025, places the spotlight on the difficult situations faced by many in third world countries. It’s easy to keep wealth, food, or even our time and talents to ourselves. The earth produces enough for everyone and God’s blessings are meant to be shared. During the harvest season, we should make sure everyone, especially those in need, are able to receive their fair share of God's abundance.
Advent Food Drive
James warns those who live in luxury and ignore the needs of others: "You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter.” True wealth isn’t in possessions, but in love, justice, and helping others. During the weeks in Advent, we collect non perishable food and non food items which are distributed to the needy here in the Canton of Zug. Let's begin the harvest season by reflecting on our abundance and start by saving for our Advent Food Drive.
