Following the Spirit’s Lead
The readings in the early weeks after Easter invite us into the lives and challenges of the first Christians. Everything was new for them. Confused, scared and excited all at the same time, they set out on a journey without knowing exactly where it would lead and even more, without having the visible presence of the one who first inspired the mission. However, they were not alone. They were led by the Holy Spirit. One person who helped support the early communities was Paul.
The Story of Paul and Barnabas
Once a fierce opponent of the Church, he experienced a life-changing encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In the very city where he had planned to arrest Christians, he began to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God. Many were astonished, but some were suspicious. When Paul returned to Jerusalem, the apostles were reluctant to meet him, but it was Barnabas, a man known for his goodness and encouragement, who stood up for Paul. Barnabas spoke on his behalf, telling the story of Paul's encounter with the risen Lord and his bold preaching. Because of Barnabas, Paul was welcomed into the community. Later, Paul and Barnabas went out on their first missionary journey through Cyprus and into Asia Minor, preaching the Good News, healing the sick, and forming new communities of faith. But their path was not without danger. In many cities, they were threatened, persecuted, and driven out. Despite their hardships, they continued on, trusting that the Holy Spirit was with them, giving them strength and courage.
Our Story
The story of Paul and Barnabas reminds us that the Christian journey has always been a path of trust. Even when the way is uncertain or difficult, the Spirit leads and strengthens those who are willing to follow.
